Valverde, Julio

Julio Cesar Valverde is a renowned Costa Rican artist, with a cheerful, humble, and sensitive personality. Valverde discovered his passion for art in a casual way, and achieved great success with a pleasure for everyday life.

An intense colour palette is his trademark, and the fantastic joy of his work is a reflection of an open, energetic, and absolutely positive personality. He admits that his creative process is spontaneous and without prior planning. When he is in front of the canvas, he uses a playful process to reach unexpected conclusions in the form of his cheerful paintings.

He began his artistic career at Masters Gilberto Aquino’s workshop (1995). In 1998 he served as Creative Director of the Casa Azul Art Center; attending the School of Fine Arts at the University of Costa Rica for continuing education programs. Valverde complemented his studies with a bachelor’s degree in Advertising Design from Veritas University.

To fulfil his passion, in 2005 he joined the Casa del Artista to explore various techniques to improve his work. This versatility introduced him to diverse forms of artistic expression and use of non-traditional materials such as polymer resins.

Valverde has played an important role in urban interventions; including the Costa Rica Cow Parade (2008), Coca Cola’s Destaparte (2011), the Peace Parade (2012) and the Costa Rican annual art fair Embrujarte; always presenting very successful and popular designs. In 2013, he participated in the Grano de Oro contest and was able to exhibit his works at the Marriott Los Suenos Hotel, Resort and Marina in Herradura.

His work has been showcased at his solo exhibitions at the Gallery of the National Bank of Costa Rica (1996), Gallery of the Costa Rican Bank (1997), the Guanacaste’s House of Culture (1999), INA’s Gallery (2002), Costa Rican’s Museum of Art (2006), Casa del Artista (2008), Bougainvillea Hotel (2011), and a very successful show at Bacchus Restaurant (2013); with stunning large-scale pieces where his mix of bright colours and textures presented a mature artistic style that showed various fantastic and lucid themes.

Julio Cesar Valverde’s work is displayed at prestigious galleries in Costa Rica such as: D’Art Galley, Wasserman Arte Contemporaneo, Matiz Gallery, Studio 54, Fusion Art, and Casa Real (in Panama).

In May 2014, Valverde made an exploratory trip to Canada with incredible results, as his works are now exhibited at The Embassy of Costa Rica in Ottawa and he participated at the Tulip Festival, an important art fair in Ottawa.

Without a doubt, Valverde has managed to fill his works with illusion, tenderness, grace, and joy; feelings as noble as the artist himself, who wishes to spread his happiness to the world, one brush stroke at a time.
