Stamatopoulos, Krystina

Stamatopoulos, Krystina

Born and raised on the South Shore of Montreal, Krystina Stamatopoulos is a Visual Arts and Media graduate, from UQAM. Since 2010, she has resided in Toronto, where she teaches art and dance in French.

Krystina’s latest paintings are a captivating combination of abstract and figurative styles. Hidden objects intend to represent specific human traits in relation to the world. Through her work, she explores the idea that an individual's self-absorption often takes over the attention paid to their surroundings and to the rest of the world; thus losing ourselves and our identities.

Generally, her artistic intention is governed by the paradoxes of life. Mainly guided by her observations of human relations and behaviors, she finds inspiration in the visual characteristics and initial function or context inherent to materials and objects. In order to express this visually, she uses mediums, materials, shapes and lines that simultaneously clash (oil vs. water, natural vs. synthetic) while still achieving harmonious cohesion.

Her creations offer a keen look at society, by questioning human behaviors, leading us to think about various conceptions of beauty, and the continuous struggle in finding balance between ambition and settlement.
