Pépin, Patrick

Technique: Acrylique

Patrick Pépin is a Canadian artist born in 1976 in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, a city located in the Eastern Townships administrative area. The artist has been painting, drawing and sculpting since childhood. An Odyssey-like quest around the world has endowed him with an unquenchable thirst for creation. His untiring journeys are the basis of his polysemous art, where the colours are the subject. The artist rigorously pursues a consequential approach where the light of a Peruvian or Spanish landscape can be recomposed in an algebraic, or even mathematical, way, then reduced ad unum, to offer a surgical composition of the visible light spectrum. On the art scene, and most notably, in the East American and Canadian art markets, he owes his bold success to the meticulous care with which he paints his light-scapes with, in a hyper-realistic way.

Patrick Pépin is represented in Canada and the United States by the Beauchamp Art Galleries, a family business with deep roots in the world of Canadian art. He is also represented in Western Canada. A massive painting of his is permanently installed in the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto. Moreover, Patrick Pépin’s works are found in many private collections in the Americas, in Europe and Asia.

The artist has recently painted a monumental all over mural on a 30 feet long piece of canvas in Costa Rica. The homogeneity of the canvas surface, as well as its materiality, give the work an "out of field" feel which definitely breaks from the traditional codes of painting. The work has been purchased by a Canadian wine trader who plans to install it in their offices. The immense rolled canvas will be divided in three parts, creating one of the most – if not the most - expensive triptychs ever sold in Quebec by an artist in his thirties. In as little as five years, Patrick Pépin has reached the apex of the Quebec art market.

Art in its infancy

"When I was very young, my mother had a cancer and the doctor saw me and said: 'Your mom is very sick, she might die, you must be very strong, do you understand?' Back home, I went in the garden, took a pebble and carved a drawing on a rock. In my childish mind, this was the only way to escape death, I had to leave a mark somewhere. That was the first time I realized I was alive and it was my first contact with art as well." – Patrick Pépin

A self-taught artist with a sharp, rough instinct, he began his painting career by negotiating a deal to recover the unused paint pots in a warehouse store, agreed to by a sales director who happened to like his work. Inspired by Augustin Lesage, Jackson Pollock, Paul-Émile Borduas and Jean-Paul Riopelle, the artist refined his approach, his signature, and an unusual style. As little as five years later, his paintings are found in every part of the world. The Québec City artist, aged 38, keeps a zen attitude to his success. The approach is sensitive, since the painter already has a prolific career.

There is something sacred in this artist’s work. He’s a workshop man, who dips his brushes in paint with great dedication, just as a child who, every day, discovers the world with wonder.
