Lortie, Antoine

Lortie, Antoine

Antoine Lortie is from Quebec City, and still resides there today. He completed his bachelor's degree in visual arts and media at Laval University in 2013, and his master's degree in painting, with honors, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, in 2016. His work is part of several private collections in France, England, Belgium, and eastern Canada.

For the artist, the representation of oneself, that of others, and those of things is a rich aesthetic facade that serves as a rampart for existence. The relationship between a mummy and its sarcophagus is a good example. The refinement of this image, and above all, the attention we give it, impoverishes, dehydrates, and decomposes the substance that is at the heart of what lies beneath it.

"We no longer search for depth in things, only in their surface image, and this is how we cultivate our world: a world of disintegrated shells on the beach. My work embraces this. Saturation, artifice, and opacity are used to represent the idea that the aesthetic bark of being, is infallible. We will never get to the bottom of things and will continue to die idiots, yet we will have the most beautiful coffins."
