Labelle, Leïla

Labelle, Leïla

Technique : Mixed Media

Leïla Labelle was born in 1960 in Montreal, where she currently lives and works.

From a very young age, Leïla has shown a specific interest in the study of different cultures. She immersed herself in books, magazines and all forms of documentation that nourished her insatiable desire for discovery. These sources began to influence her life and her artistic work. Her travels also started to affect her artistic practice, as was the case during her long stay in Mexico.

Leïla enrolled in fashion design at Concordia University in Montreal, and completed her studies with sculpture, ceramics and jewelry workshops, thus confirming her love for the arts. The artist also studied Chinese calligraphy and painting in 2016 with world-renowned artist Liankui Zhang. During this time, she also attended workshops to learn about natural dyeing Washi paper (Japanese tissue paper).

In 2015, after months of reflection and experimentation with natural dyes, inks and various handmade papers, Leïla devoted her time to creating her contemporary collection of kimonos, geishas and Chinese women inspired by "The Silk Road" and other distant lands.

This collection is marked by traditional clothing as well as contemporary Asian Street art, Japanese manga and jewelry ornaments used in the prestigious Dior Haute Couture collections.

Her art is not created for the sole purpose of being contemplated, but rather presents itself as a story to be discovered, that one travels through and experiences. The depth of her dreams, the richness of her travels and her many creative experiences are all distinctly felt in her artworks.

Leïla Labelle has taken part in several solo, collective, and charitable exhibitions in Montreal, New York, France and Italy. The artist has also collaborated with Oxfam Québec on a number of social issues, including women's rights in Bolivia and Burkina Faso. Her works are part of many public, private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States and Europe.

Leïla has received numerous awards and medals for her work, including:
- A Special Merit Award at The 6th Annual curated "All Women" Art Exhibition, Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery, Florida;
- An Award of Excellence in Manhattan Arts International's "New Beginnings" online curated exhibition, New York;
- A silver award in mixed media in a collective exhibition at the Galleria La Pigna, Rome. The jury was made up of the president of the gallery, a journalist from the Vatican magazine and an art historian.
