John Young Johnstone(1887-1930)

John Young Johnstone was born in Montreal, Quebec.

He studied at the Arts Association of Montreal alongside William Brymner, and then studied at the Grande Chaumière Academy in Paris under Castelucheo, L. Simon and R. Menard. During this period, he also travelled throughout Switzerland, France and Belgium.

While working with many mediums, he is most well-known for his landscapes, urban scenes, and his impressionistic- style portraits.

From 1918-1928, he taught at the National Monument School. From 1915-1923 he showed his work with the Royal Canadian Academy. From 1911-1925 he was with the American Association of Museums.

Collections :
His works are included in many private and public collections, The Canadian Museum of Fine Art, among others.

Prizes and Awards :
In 1920, John Young Johnstone was inducted into the Royal Academy of Canada. His piece entitled “A Quebec village” was reproduced in the book “Fine Arts in Canada”, by MacTavish. This book named Johnstone among the best Canadian painters.
