Hammer, Mike

Mike Hammer was born in Calgary and currently resides in Toronto.

Mike Hammer grew up in a close-knit family who all share his passion for the visual arts and music. His father, Mosh Hammer, is a renowned violinist. When Mike and his little sister were children, his father would let them stay up past their bedtimes to listen to him practice with his chamber orchestra buddies. He also has fond memories of sitting on the stairs, listening to his father teach music to his students.

Mike Hammer’s unique path started with studies in psychology and education and has since branched out to the visual arts. He and his father have collaborated on several occasions, forming form an impressive duo that inspires and surprises audiences around the world with "Beethoven meets Pollock", an innovative event that merges classical music with live artistic creation. While his father performs various pieces, Mike transforms the melodies into spontaneous action paintings and drawings.

In 2000, he presented "No Things", an installation of modular abstract paintings at the Childress Gallery in California that earned him glowing reviews in the L.A. Times.

Mike Hammer's pictorial works are rooted in abstract expressionism. The key artists of this movement who have inspired his art are Jackson Pollock and Gerhard Richter. With this inspiration in mind, Hammer creates unique action paintings that consist of large "drippings" and plays with straight lines or curves, using squeeze bottles to create sustained movement.
