East, Benoît

Medium : oil, engraving, lithography

Benoît East was born in St. Augustine, Portneuf, Quebec, in 1915. He attended the École des beaux-arts de Québec in Quebec City from 1934-1940 and 1944-1945. He then obtained his teaching diploma. He subsequently joined the school's staff to teach engraving and lithography. In 1948, on a scholarship awarded by the Government of Quebec, East studied lithography in Paris.

Influenced by French masters such as Georges Braque and Pierre Matisse, East is best known for his “still life” paintings and for his landscapes. In 1946, he collaborated with Marius Plamondon to design and create a 60-foot stained-glass work for the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal.
