Cotterill "Frogman", Tim

Tim Cotterill, also known as Frogman, was born in 1950 in England.

Tim Cotterill was brought up in a horticultural household, surrounded by plants, flowers and small ponds. In his youth, Tim enjoyed observing all the creatures that coexisted in these natural habitats, especially the frogs. He admired frogs for their diverse, vibrant colours, their shapes and even their personality. A few years later, he began working as an apprentice in a metal factory where he quickly became an expert in the manufacturing of metal sculptures. For 10 years, he created more than a thousand sculptures of birds and all sorts of other animals, some of which were auctioned at Sotheby's.

Following a series of trips to California, he decided to settle in Venice Beach, to be surrounded by its beautiful beaches and palm trees and enjoy Southern California’s year-round sunshine; it felt like a true oasis. All this inspirational beauty gave him renewed vitality and passion to continue his creative work. This new creative focus led him to create frog sculptures in order to share his fascination with these small, quirky amphibians, as well as his unique sense of humour.

What makes his sculptures especially attractive and endearing are the themes and typical human characteristics that he incorporates into his work, such as sportsmanship with his series on swimming and dancing, or sweet romance with his Romeo and Juliet series, Prince Charming and Valentine.

His sculptures are formed under high temperature to obtain a myriad of colours and finishes. A wide variety of chemicals, natural pigments and dyes are used to make patinas, which give frogs small and big colours that seem more real than those in nature. Jim’s largest sculpture is 12 feet tall and weighs over 400 pounds.

With his work represented in 24 galleries throughout England and more than 80 galleries in North America, Tim Cotterill is currently the largest seller of small bronze sculptures in the world.
