Julie Cosgrove is a young emerging artist who recently graduated from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. She obtained her college degree in visual arts with honours at Dawson College, Montreal. She has been awarded several prizes for her work, namely the Lakehead University President’s Award and the Dean’s award for abstract painting.

The artist really enjoys the layering process, and the raw canvas allows her to apply multiple layers that are beneath the surface. In her own words, ‘this is a reflection of the way we perceive things…through filters and through our own history.’ The incidental marks that remain as a result of different amounts of layered paint become almost like ‘ghost images’, and sometimes act as windows into another surface or space, adding depth. The artist chooses a raw canvas for its matte finish and for the way it allows light to be absorbed onto the canvas, often changing as the light changes.

Julie Cosgrove’s work is about how light, the environment, and the atmosphere affects our lives, and she thus believes it is important to see how the painting also changes depending on setting and light.Julie Cosgrove’s paintings have been exhibited in many group and solo shows since 2002.
