Champoux, Eric W.

Champoux, Eric W.

Medium: Mixed media

Born at Val D’or, Québec in 1975, he now resides in Montreal.

Éric began painting at a very early age and showed great potential to his entourage. He continued his art studies at the Rosemont CEGEP and the Marie-Victorin CEGEP in the Montreal region. Fascinated with the world of theatre as well as film-making, he continued his education at the Canadian National Theatre School and graduated with his diploma in film production in 1977. Today, he is the Lighting Manager for important productions such as Ovo, of the Cirque du Soleil.

It has come as a normal progression in his artistic career to use the effects of light as a central theme in his creations. The individuals he paints are drenched in a strange, nocturnal atmosphere, draped in smoke and fog. The result is a brooding, dark work highlighted by the use of bursts of colour and blinding hues of piercing light. To paraphrase Éric, “I have always found that light has a singular manner of enveloping and magnifying a subject that is already quite stunning and stands out by itself.”

To begin with, all of Éric’s works are developed on an abstract base, taking care to balance his colour values throughout the canvas. Only after completing this stage does he advance in creating on canvas his vision that has taken root in his vivid imagination. The images that come forth are a series of important elements of a story being told complete with a subtle underlying intrigue. The final step in realising the completion of the work consists of the addition of numerous details, completing facial details and rounding out his highlights to give character to his subjects.

The finished works of Éric.W. Champoux present a highly sharpened sense of aesthetic values to a very appreciative clientele.
