Blouin, Stéphane

Medium : metal

Born in Quebec in 1971. He currently resides in Quebec.

His artistic endeavours began at the age of ten when he was given chisels for sculpting wood. This gift was to change his outlook on life forever. As a teenager he undertook wood sculpting classes. It was then that sculpting became his life-long passion.

In College, Stephane pursued his studies in fine arts and experimented with different sculpting mediums. But the discovery of metal turned out to be Stephane’ s real revelation. Metal brought him satisfaction like no other medium before.

Stephane Blouin refined his artistic abilities by undertaking cabinet-making and in furniture designing. He completed his studies in 1993; a period of time where the economy was not favourable for craftsmen. He developed his skills in sales and is still working in this field. However, Stephane has always continued to savour the special moments where he can set his imagination free to sculpt, thus, liberating his creative energy.

Today, awaiting his 40th anniversary, Stephane has managed to combine his professional career, his parent-hood, and his artistic aspirations. His sculptures are mainly inspired by nature. Stephane has always preferred to work with rough mediums such as wood, stone, glass, and metal. For Stephane, to pound on metal in order to transform it into a sculpture brings about a paradox: Sculpting metal involves great energy since pounding and curving metal is physically demanding. As well, an artist must necessarily be sensitive in order to bring warmth and lightness to this otherwise cold and rigid medium. Stephane Blouin masters the capacity of transforming something bold and heavy into something fragile and airy.
